Social and religious leader Muhammad Rafi Fazili’s arrest and torture condemned

Islamabad, 09 Aug 2010: Knowledgeable sources from Srinagar have reported Police terrorism and torture against women inside private homes also. In this regard it has been quoted that a well known Social-religious leader R/O of Humhama (New Airport Srinagar) Muhammad Rafi Fazili a retired  Engineer with  State award of Honesty—now Imam Shahe-Hamdan mosque and running a Children’s school, has been booked under regime’s Infamous Public Safety Act and lodged in Kathua Jail. His son Abdul Samie Fazili also was arrested.

                Muhammad Rafi Fazili is brother-in-law of Muhammad Farooq Rehmani Chairman J&K People’s Freedom League. Before former’s arrest during the late hours of 31 August, Armed Forces cordoned off Humhama on the Airport Road; led by DSP/SHO Budgam and Humhama, first broke into the house- compound of Muhammad Rafi Fazili—using smoke-guns and teargas shells to force family members out of their rooms. In this highly brutal operation, police officers and soldiers severely beat up Muhammad Rafi Fazili, his sons and daughters with sticks- using highly abusive and objectionable language against them. Later in the dark rainy night both father and son were taken to Budgam Police Station, where they were again physically and mentally tortured by Police officers and their staff. Local inhabitants protesting against police savagery were also baton-charged. Eye witnesses revealed that the condition of   his health was very bad.

                The area is very tense and protest demonstrations and sit-in against police brutalities continued till late last night. More arrests of youth have been reported from the area and more troopers have been deployed in the area to use brute force against protesting women and children. Different social and humanitarian groups and Imams have strongly condemned these police brutalities and arrests and decided to continue peaceful sit-in different parts of Budgam and Srinagar.  

                Muhammad Farooq Rehmani Chairman Jammu and Kashmir People’s Freedom League’s has strongly condemned the use of brute force against women, children, senior citizens and peaceful protesters and urged the World human rights organizations to initiate solid measures against India’s repression in Jammu and Kashmir.
