India deserves international pressure on referendum in Kashmir – Muhammad Farooq Rehmani

Islamabad, 28 Aug, 2010: Muhammad Farooq Rehmani Chairman Jammu and Kashmir People’s Freedom League has warned that although India was bound under its own international word to grant the right of self determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, but it now spurned the clarion call to redeem the pledge of a free, fair and impartial plebiscite in the former princely state of British India. He said that India had become a law unto itself, and therefore deserved international pressure to concede the popular demand for the independence of Kashmir. He hoped that after granting the right of self determination to the Kashmiris, the region would enjoy peace and security and bitter enemies could become peaceful neighbors in the turbulent region. In case India failed to read writings on the wall, responsibility would lie on the Indian Government, leaving Kashmiris no option except to continue the present mass struggle more resolutely and vigorously. He urged the Security Council members, who adopted historical resolutions on Kashmir between 1948 and 1965 to revive their activities on Kashmir and bring India and Pakistan closer to a durable solution in line with UNCIP resolutions and urges and aspirations of the Kashmiris. He said that India should remember that the blood of oppressed people in the world produced miracles, so the valiant sons and daughters of Kashmir would get the reward of their sacrifices very soon.

Condemning the latest spree of killings and arrests of common people mostly youngsters he said the unbridled powers under the AFSPA and PSA had made army and police brutal and they were paying deaf ear to  any call of restraint by the humanity—causing daily killings in all rural and urban areas of Kashmir.  He said that before it became too late, the international community should loose no time to address the current situation of Kashmir by resolving the issue in accordance with the principle of the right of self determination to save the region from the scourge of war.
